We took an excursion to Ostia Antica, a harbour city of ancient Rome. There was lots of walking on uneven ground, and poor John had to manage with his twisted knee from the day before trying to dodge a bus. (After returning from our trip, we found out that he actually tore some ligaments. Ouch.)
On our way back into the city, we stopped off at the beach for a little R&R. It was a sunny and beautiful day!
Today, we walked in the same foot steps as Romans from 620 B.C.
Everyone (except John) climbed up these steps for a better view.
You have an even deeper appreciation of ancient Rome when you see an entire city of ruins.
This old theatre (which is still in use today for concerts) was pretty cool. I could hear our guide perfectly fine from way up there.
This was a public latrine. The little hole under the seat was where they used to keep a washable sponge on a stick (a.k.a. toilet paper) and the river below would flush the stick clean. (Hmmm... I don't think so.)
Here is where they stored the vino.
I thought this nun looked so cute with those three tall trees.
Our chartered bus ride to and from Ostia was very comfy!
On our way back to the city, we stopped off at the beach.
From far away, they reminded me of little seagulls on the seashore.
We ate a fantastic dinner at a tiny restaurant called Ristorante Montevecchio near Piazza Navona. The staff was really excited because they thought we were Japanese, as the chef had spent time in Japan. Unfortunately for them, we are Chinese.
It was around 50 degrees, but it was worth the numerous self-timer attempts to get this Kodak moment.
